ASKING FOR INFORMATION

 ASKING FOR INFORMATION use of WH-Questions
  • What : used when asking about something that you don't know anything about.
  • When : adv. used when asking what time something will happen.
  • Where : adv. conjunction used in order to ask or tell someone the place or position of something.
  • Why : adv. conjunction for what reason
  • Who : used in order to ask about a person or group of people, or to make a statement about them.
  • How : adv. conjunction used in order to ask about or explain the way to do something or the way something happened.
There are a number of formulas used when asking for information in English. Here are some of the most common
  • Could you tell me ...
  • Do tou know ...
  • Do you happen to know ...
  • I'd like to know ...
  • Could you find out ...
  • I'm interested in ..
These two forms are used for asking for the information on the telephone
  • I'm calling to find out ...
  • I'm calling about ... 
example dialogue :


Mark : Excuse me. Can you help me? I'm looking for the windsurfing centre.
Elie   : Ah, yes, the windsurfing centre is at Platja D'aro beach. Do you know the beach?
Mark : Not really, no.
Elie   : Let me show you on the map. It's here, look.
Mark : Ok. Great. And where's the cinema?
Elie  : Erm, there's a cinema in Girona, next to the Hospital Bufill.
Mark : Ok, great. Thanks very much.
